Study What You Love

Dougs Recital 2008 from Ken Wagner on Vimeo.

I met Doug Leveton when I was in high school, at the pre-college program at ccac in Oakland. We were room mates for the month of July in 2003. After our departure, he stayed in his home state of Oregon to attend the Southern Oregon University. At the pre-college program, he was in the architecture dept. Upon completing the month long program, he decided to scrap architecture as a career path to pursue his passion for drumming. And so, the "follow your heart" scenario lead him to Ashland to study percussion, musical theory, and music business. This is a video of his final recital, that he organized and performed in with some of his fellow musicians. It is evident that his time in colllege was spent mastering his skills and now, from the perspective of my own naive musical talent, Doug has become quite accomplished. Don't think about the money, the career, the societal pressure to succeed financially. If you are going to go to college, study what you love, and you will be a better person for it. Doug is in my extended network of out of state friends, and he is an outstanding human being. His genuine talent and his vigor for feeding the fire inside has given me much hope for us all who choose to do what we love over what would be the most lucrative. I am excited by what the future holds for Mr. Leveton's musical creations as well as our inevitable collaborations. Can you hear it ?
